Cuttings Volatiles: Produce More Oil, More Gas, and Less Water
During the last decade AHS has worked several large projects for various operators in the Appalachian Basin. These projects have focused on resource assessment, landing laterals, determining reservoir and product quality, mapping thermal maturity, and recently on dry gas vertical product allocation by statistical comparison of our Cuttings Volatiles Analyses versus our Produced Gas Volatiles Analyses from the same well. These examples will be discussed in detail, along with a general description of this unique patented technology developed and built at AHS.
Mike Smith, PhD
President
Advanced Hydrocarbon Stratigraphy, Inc
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Mike received a BA in Geology from Rutgers College in 1977, and a PhD in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Hawaii in 1981.
Mike has been developing technology and analyzing volatiles in rocks and applying that data to Oil and Gas Exploration and Production since coming to Tulsa in 1981.
Mike invented Fluid Inclusion Stratigraphy (FIS), now marketed by Schlumberger, at Amoco Research in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Mike resigned from Amoco in 1994 to start AHS. Mike sold AHS’s new Fluid Inclusion Volatiles (FIV) technology to ExxonMobil in 1999. After consulting with ExxonMobil for 10 years, Mike restarted AHS with a focus on analyzing trace present day oil and gas in cuttings and has developed a unique patented Cryo-Mass Spectrometer system for the gentle extraction and analyses of oil, gas, and formation water from cuttings.
