A Scientific Odyssey to Antarctica
Aboard a Korean Icebreaker

Dr. Jamey Sutz – ODNR Division of Geological Survey

Abstract: In the Austral summer of 2022, an international team of scientists boarded a Korean Polar Institute research vessel bound for the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica. Our goal was an all-out geophysical assault on the Thwaites Glacier and surrounding region. We would employ air, land and sea-based geophysics to map the base of the glacier and detect the interaction of glacial meltwater with warm, salty water currently melting the floating ice tongue. Terrestrial and marine geological samples were collected for a long-term perspective on ice sheet changes in the region (and will be on display at this talk). Overall, 27 days of productive science led to a multitude of scientific discoveries and a lifetime of incredible experiences. This story would not be complete without mention of seal oceanographers, hairy lichen, sea sickness and a little international drama. Come hear about this incredible journey, some initial results and the unique connections to Ohio’s history of glacial geology research. All are welcome.
